Why should you train if it doesn’t make you free and happy? - Tanouye Tenshin

Tanouye Tenshin was born Stanley Tanouye in Hawaii and was a high school band teacher. He was a genius in the martial arts, receiving the 6th or 7th degree black belt from seven different schools by the age of 32. One such rank would be an impressive lifetime achievement. His hope of realizing the Way through martial arts was fulfilled when he met Omori Sogen, a Japanese Zen master who was also a master of the sword and the brush, and considered by some to be the last real samurai. Tanouye Roshi’s legacy is Chozen-ji, a temple in a lush valley of Hawaii, and a way to enter Zen through the body. He exemplified the principle that “All Ways are One in the End” in his mastery of the fine arts, the martial arts and the healing arts. As a strategist and priest, his guidance and training was sought out by business leaders, politicians and spiritual leaders. Native Hawaiian spiritual teacher Nana Veary described him as “A Zen master who taught Aloha.”
